National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.Located in Washington, D.C., the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists.  NMWA brings recognition to the achievements of women artists of all periods and nationalities by exhibiting, preserving, acquiring, and researching art by women and by teaching the public about their accomplishments.

More than 120,000 visitors enjoy the museum each year.  Its collection contains works by more than 800 artists from the 16th century to the present, including Judith Leyster, Maria Sibylla Merian, Mary Cassatt, Camille Claudel, Georgia O’Keeffe, Frida Kahlo, Elizabeth Catlett, Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler, Magdalena Abakanowicz and Louise Bourgeois.

NMWA is located on 1250 New York Avenue, N.W. in Washington D.C. (By Metro, exit at Metro Center to 12th Street and walk 2 blocks.)  It was incorporated as a private, non-profit museum in 1981. Two years after its founding, a dilapidated Washington landmark, a former Masonic Temple, was purchased to house the collection; it was refurbished and opened to the public in 2007.  The interior is one of the most striking interior spaces in Washington, D.C. with oval balconies, sweeping staircases, sparkling Turkish marble and glistening crystal chandeliers.  Susan Fisher Sterling, Ph.D. is the Director of the museum.
